PCG issues radio challenge to Chinese vessels in Sabina Shoal
The Philippine Coast Guard on Wednesday released the video of its personnel challenging via radio the Chinese militia vessels spotted in Sabina Shoal, which is within the Philippines exclusive economic zone.
"This is Philippine Coast Guard. We are BRP Cabra (MRRV-4409). You are within Philippine Exclusive Economic Zone. You are requested to provide the following: name of vessel, intention, last and next port of call on Channel 16," said a female crew member of BRB Cabra in the video.
National Security Adviser Hermogenes Esperon, in a statement on Tuesday, said the Chinese vessels dispersed after the radio challenge.
Seven of the Chinese ships were found in the area last April 27.
On April 29, the BRP Cabra returned to Sabina Shoal and discovered five remaining Chinese militia ships, which later on left the area upon arrival of the Filipino vessel.
Tension between China and the Philippines has elevated due to the lingering presence of Chinese vessels in the West Philippine Sea despite calls from top government officials to leave the area.
Diplomatic protests were lodged against China due to these incidents. --KBK, GMA News
