Labor Day peaceful, no untoward incidents –PNP

The 119th International Workers' Day or Labor Day was orderly and ended peacefully, the Philippine National Police (PNP) said Saturday evening.

PNP chief Police General Debold Sinas said no significant untoward incidents were reported as various groups gathered to call for wage subsidies.

The PNP chief said that around 1,850 individuals participated in the rallies.

Meanwhile, 10,366 police officers were deployed to maintain health protocols amid the coronavirus disease 2019 pandemic.

Sinas said the public protests dispersed at around 1 p.m.

"I would also like to commend our police personnel for their exercise of utmost restraint and maximum tolerance in handling Labor Day activities while risking their own safety due to possible COVID-19 infection," Sinas said in a statement.

The Kilusang Mayo Uno (KMU) earlier lamented how their protest at the Liwasang Bonifacio in Manila was prevented by police officers of the Manila Police District

Other progressive groups that marked Labor Day with protests included Anakpawis, Bayan Muna, Kilusang Magbubukid ng Pilipinas, PAMALAKAYA, among others. — DVM, GMA News
