On Rizal Day, Duterte urges Pinoys to foster solidarity, patriotism
As the country commemorates the 124th death anniversary of national hero Jose Rizal, President Rodrigo Duterte called on Filipinos to promote solidarity and patriotism in order to bring change in the society.
In his virtual message during the flag-raising and wreath laying ceremony in Rizal Park, Manila, Duterte underscored that the nobility of Rizal "enabled our forebears to rise against tyranny and build society founded by lessons taught in history."
"I join the entire nation in commemorating the 124th anniversary of the martyrdom of Dr. Jose Rizal. The trials we continue to face this year have given rise in new breed of heroes, who have shown extraordinary courage in the face of unprecedented challenges," Duterte said.
"As we remember Rizal's sacrifice more than a century ago, let us continue working together, fostering solidarity, integrity and patriotism among our people as we pursue real and meaningful change in our society," he added.
Defense Secretary Delfin Lorenzana and Manila City Mayor Isko Moreno led the ceremony this Wednesday morning.

In his Rizal Day message, Lorenzana stressed that Rizal's advocacies for the youth continue to live on through the country's present-day defenders, from soldiers in the remotest areas to the daily front liners, who continue to embody Rizal’s spirit of patriotism and sense of self-sacrifice.
"Our One Defense Team remains steadfast in our commitment to protect the young generation from the forces of corruption from the communist terrorist groups who lead promising, youthful lives astray," Lorenzana said.
The Defense chief also encouraged the public to honor Rizal's memory "by coming together to pave the way for a more peaceful, united, and strong nation for the current and future generations." —KG, GMA News
