State of calamity in Luzon to remain in force until lifted by Duterte
The state of calamity in Luzon will be in effect until lifted by President Rodrigo Duterte, according to the proclamation released by Malacañang on Wednesday.
Duterte placed the island group under a state of calamity following the onslaught of typhoons Quinta, Rolly, and Ulysses over the past weeks, causing widespread damage to agricultural crops and infrastructure and severe disruption to the lives of thousands of Filipinos.
“The declaration of state of calamity will hasten the rescue, relief and rehabilitation efforts of the government and the private sector, including any humanitarian assistance,” Proclamation 1051 stated.
This will also empower the government to control prices of basic necessities as well as to utilize appropriate funds for disaster relief.
Duterte also directed the law enforcement agencies, with the support from the military, to ensure peace and order in affected areas.
“The state of calamity shall remain in force and effect until lifted by the President,” the proclamation stated. -MDM, GMA News
