KWF urges use of vernacular for COVID-19 info dissemination

The Komisyon sa Wikang Filipino (KWF) said Filipino and other native languages should also be used to disseminate information in this time of the COVID-19 pandemic, as the country celebrates the Buwan ng Wikang Pambansa this August 2020.

"Ang mahalaga po ay magamit natin ang wikang Filipino sa panahon ng pandemya kasi alam natin pong mga kababayan na talagang naghihirap po tayo sa mga nangyayari ngayon," KWF Commissioner Dr. Arthur Casanova said at the Laging Handa Public briefing.

"Hinihimok ko po ang sambayanang Pilipino na gamitin po ang wikang Filipino kaalinsabay ng paggamit ng iba pang mga katutubong wika sa kani-kanilang lugar para mas mapabilis at higit na maunawaan po ang mga impormasyon at kabatiran hinggil sa pandemyang coronavirus," he added.

Casanova said their office received requests from different government agencies, particularly the Department of Health (DOH), to translate infographics relating to COVID-19 into Filipino and other native languages.

"Dahil po nagdiriwang po tayo ng Buwan ng Wikang Pambansa, hinihimok ko po ang lahat na gumamit po ng wikang Filipino sa mga talakayan, sa forums, sa pagpapahatid ng impormasyon," he said.

Casanova said this will help the state of the Filipino language to become an "intellectualized" language that can be used for higher levels of discourses and education.

The Buwan ng Wikang Pambansa 2020 has the theme "Wika ng Kasaysayan, Kasaysayan ng Wika: Ang mga Katutubong Wika sa maka-Filipinong Bayanihan kontra Pandemya."

The KWF commissioner said they will hold a short poem writing contest with the theme of coronavirus 2019 to urge the youth to contribute to information dissemination against the disease. — DVM, GMA News
