Palace pays tribute to Danding Cojuangco

Malacañang on Wednesday paid tribute to San Miguel Corporation (SMC) chairman Eduardo “Danding” Cojuangco Jr., who passed away on Tuesday at the age of 85.

Presidential spokesperson Harry Roque said Cojuangco had an “immense contribution to the socioeconomic development of the Philippines” through SMC, one of the country’s largest conglomerates whose businesses include food, beverage, energy, power, oil refining and infrastructure.

Roque said SMC has provided livelihood opportunities to thousands of Filipinos.

The diversified conglomerate has also been a “reliable partner” of the government in mitigating the impact of the COVID-19 pandemic by providing support and assistance to frontliners and vulnerable sectors, he added.

“We are deeply saddened by the passing of [Mr. Eduardo “Danding” Cojuangco, Jr.],” Roque said.

“The Palace offers its fervent prayers for the eternal repose of the soul of Mr. Cojuangco as we convey our heartfelt condolences to his family, colleagues, friends, and loved ones.”

Cabinet Secretary Karlo Nograles described Cojuangco as a “true titan” in Philippine business and politics. Cojuangco, who ran unsuccessfully for president in 1992, was the founder of political party Nationalist People's Coalition.

“Ninong Danding was a larger than life figure whose colorful life shaped the course of our history. His wisdom and business acumen will be sorely missed. His verve for life will continue to inspire those he leaves behind,” Nograles said.
