Labor Day generally peaceful, orderly — PNP
The Philippine National Police (PNP) deemed as peaceful and orderly the observance of Labor Day, its spokesman said on Friday.
In a statement, Police Brigadier General Bernard Banac said authorities would continue to monitor the situation across the country.
Banac also expressed gratitude to all leaders of various groups who heeded the call of PNP chief Police General Archie Francisco Gamboa to not hold protest actions as mass gatherings are not allowed under enhanced community quarantine.
"Elsewhere across the country, many local labor and transport organizations totally abandoned earlier plans coordinated by militant umbrella organizations to stage public assemblies, and instead took their mass action to cyberspace via Zoom and Facebook platforms—safely and orderly without any risk to public health," Banac said.
Labor group Kilusang Mayo Uno had a virtual rally to push for labor rights, especially in this time of crisis. The group urged the government to provide "timely" aid for those who are in need.
Arrests
Banac, however, cited two incidents in which some people were arrested for allegedly holding lightning rallies. Ten individuals were nabbed in Marikina City while two others were arrested in Rodriguez, Rizal.
Earlier, National Capital Region Police Office chief Police Major General Debold Sinas said he would go to Marikina and assess if the volunteers arrested will be released.
Marikina Mayor Marcelino Teodoro said the volunteers were just conducting relief operations, adding that they asked permission from him before distributing food packs. — Anna Felicia Bajo/RSJ, GMA News
