Duterte names Archie Gamboa as next PNP chief

President Rodrigo Duterte on Friday night announced the appointment of Philippine National Police officer-in-charge Police Lieutenant General Archie Gamboa as the next PNP chief.

"We have the PNP chief. I’m going to appoint you as the regular PNP. But you, Secretary Año and I will have a long, long talk first," Duterte said in a speech in Davao City.

“Pinakita mo sa akin yung sincerity mo and I’d like you to leave something that you will be remembered by the country," he added.

Gamboa, who was present, gave Duterte a salute.

Gamboa was appointed officer-in-charge of the PNP in October 2019 after then PNP chief Director General Oscar Albayalde resigned his post amid allegations of graft.

Albayalde was linked to the alleged recycling of illegal drugs seized by police officer in Pampanga in 2013.

He was the chief of the Pampanga police when the raid happened.

Gamboa's appointment as PNP chief came after the Department of Justice found probable cause to charge Albayalde with graft. —NB, GMA News
