In a statement, Armed Forces of the Philippines (AFP) spokesperson Brigadier General Edgard Arevalo said the explosion purportedly came from a hand grenade lobbed at military quarters occupied by enlisted personnel assigned to the Home Affairs Office.
Initial investigation found that the blast happened at around 6:20 a.m. at an apartment unit occupied by Staff Sergeant Larry de Guzman.
De Guzman sustained bruises while his wife and one of their two children suffered shrapnel wounds.
The victims are now being treated at the V. Luna Hospital.
De Guzman’s other child was unharmed. No other people in adjacent units were injured.
“The incident appears to have emanated from a domestic problem where the spouses have been engaged in a heated argument prior to the incident, initial investigation further shows,” Arevalo said.
Investigators from the AFP and Philippine National Police are now looking into suspicions that De Guzman’s wife triggered the explosion. —Joviland Rita and Julia Mari Ornedo/KG, GMA News
