96% of Filipinos entering 2020 with hope —SWS

Ninety-six percent of Filipino adults are entering 2020 with hope rather than with fear, results of the Fourth Quarter 2019 Social Weather Survey conducted from December 13 to 16, 2019 have shown.

The percentage of Filipinos who are entering the new year with hope is four points up from 92 percent in 2018. It also tied the record-high achieved in 2017.

Four percent will enter the new year with fear, down from the eight percent in 2018. It matches the the record-low levels in 2017 and 2011.

The fourth quarter survey was conducted via face-to-face interviews with 1,200 adults nationwide—300 each in Metro Manila, Balance Luzon, Visayas, and Mindanao.

It has error margins of ±3% for national percentages, and ±6% each for Metro Manila, Balance Luzon, Visayas, and Mindanao.

"The Social Weather Survey items on New Year hope and New Year's resolution are non-commissioned. They are included on SWS's own initiative and released as a public service," the polling firm said.

SWS said hope for the new year has always been high, starting at 87% when SWS first asked the question in 2000.

"It rose to 88% in 2001 and 95% in 2002 before easing to 90% in 2003, 81% in 2004, and 85% in 2005. It ranged from 91% to 92% from 2006 to 2008, and went up to 89% in 2009," SWS said.

"It rose to 93% in 2010, and has since then been at 90s levels, reaching as high as 96% in 2017 and 2019," it added. —NB, GMA News
