BACKGROUND

Government appointments for previous vice presidents

Vice President Leni Robredo was not the first vice president to be given another post as all Philippine vice presidents from 1987 were traditionally tasked with various assignments in government, according to a report by Saleema Refran On GMA News' 24 Oras on Wednesday.

Robredo was designated as the co-chairperson of the Inter-Agency Committee on Anti-Illegal Drugs on Wednesday afternoon.

Prior to this, in July 2016, she was appointed chairperson of the Housing and Urban Development Coordinating Council (HUDCC).  She resigned in December of the same year after being told not to attend Cabinet meetings.  Robredo was critical of the Duterte administration's war on drugs.

Salvador Laurel was appointed secretary of the Department of Foreign Affairs during the administration of then President Corazon Aquino.

Joseph Estrada was delegated by former President Fidel Ramos as chairman of the Presidential Anti-Crime Commission.

When Estrada became president, he appointed as Department of Social Welfare and Development secretary then Vice President Gloria Macapagal-Arroyo.

Arroyo took over the administration after Estrada was kicked out of office. She designated Vice President Teofisto Guingona Jr. as Department of Foreign Affairs secretary.

In her second term, Arroyo appointed as chairperson of HUDCC her running mate and Vice President Noli de Castro.

Jejomar Binay also became the chairman of HUDCC and Presidential Adviser on overseas Filipino workers concerns during the administration of Benigno Aquino III.
