Memorial Day observed in rites at Manila American Cemetery
In observance of Memorial Day, the US Embassy in the Philippines on Sunday held a ceremony at the Manila American Cemetery in Fort Bonifacio, Taguig City.
The ceremony was attended by Armed Forces of the Philippines (AFP) Vice Chief of Staff Lieutenant General Salvador B. Mison Jr., Pacific American Battle Monuments Commission Superintendent Larry Adkison, American Association of the Philippines Chairman Rick Sobreviñas , and US Embassy to the Philippines Charge d' Affaires John Law.
During the program, Mison said if it wasn’t for the courage of the earlier generation, freedom would not have been experienced in the present, according to a report of Victoria Tulad on GMA News TV's Balitanghali on Sunday.
As the country faces transnational crime, piracy, terrorism, and climate change, the heroism of the fallen soldiers should inspire Filipinos to be aware of their identity as a race.
Law said in a speech that the relations between the Philippines and US will remain strong despite the long years.
Sobreviñas said the importance of Memorial Day and the relationship of the two countries should be taught to the younger generations.
Aside from prayers offered, wreaths were also laid at the monument during the ceremony.
Former Foreign Affairs Secretary Albert Del Rosario and other representatives from different agencies were also present.
Memorial Day is an American holiday observed on the last Monday of May to honor soldiers who were fallen during their service for the US Armed Forces.
More than 17,000 fallen soldiers of World War II from the US, the Philippines, and other allied nations were rested at the Manila American Cemetery.
In observance of Memorial Day, the US Embassy in the Philippines and affiliated offices were closed to the public on Monday. —Joviland Rita/KG, GMA News
