Honasan: Tell the true story of EDSA People Power revolt
Senator Gregorio Honasan II on Monday said Filipinos deserve to be told with genuine stories why the 1986 EDSA People Power Revolution took place.
"It is of utmost importance to tell the true story of the February 1986 Revolution to our most precious children, the next generation of citizens and leaders, why it happened, what it was for and not against," Honasan said in a statement posted on Facebook.
"We will not compete for attention with those who distort facts and history, continue to claim credit and propriety ownership over what rightfully belongs to the Filipino people," he added.
Honasan was a member of the Reform the Armed Forces Movement (RAM) which played a role in the 1986 People Power Revolution. It was a group of officers from the Armed Forces of the Philippines that broke away from the leadership of the late dictator Ferdinand Marcos.
The group was also behind the August 28, 1987 failed military uprising during the administration of Marcos' successor, the late President Corazon Aquino.
Honasan urged the public to commemorate EDSA People Power Revolution for what it was for and "continue to work and pray hard for reforms more than just change in personalities, national unity, lasting peace and prosperity."
For this year's celebration, President Rodrigo Duterte urged Filipino citizens to remember that the revolt had restored the ballot, and thus made the upcoming midterm elections possible. —Anna Felicia Bajo/KG, GMA News
