Duterte signs law celebrating Lapu-lapu victory vs. Magellan, April 27 now a holiday in city
President Rodrigo Duterte has signed into law the measure declaring April 27 Lapu-Lapu day or Adlaw ni Lapu-Lapu.
Republic Act 11040 designates April 27 as a special working holiday throughout the country and a special non-working holiday in Lapu-Lapu City, Cebu.
The act commemorates the victory of Lapu-Lapu and his men over the Spaniards led by Ferdinand Magellan in the historic "Battle of Mactan" on April 27, 1521.
RA 11040, approved by President Duterte on June 29, 2018, will take effect after 15 days following the completion of its publication in the Official Gazette or in a newspaper for general circulation in the Philippines.
The measure is a consolidation of Senate Bill No. 108 and House Bill No. 6782 passed by the Senate and House of Representatives on March 20, 2018 and March 21, 2018 respectively. —Margaret Claire Layug/NB, GMA News
