Fratmen charged over Atio Castillo death moved to Manila jail

The 10 fraternity members facing charges in connection with the death of freshman law student Horacio "Atio" Castillo III have been transferred to the Manila City Jail after two months of detention at the National Bureau of Investigation (NBI).

The members of the University of Santo Tomas-based Aegis Juris Fraternity left the NBI Detention Center and arrived at the city jail Wednesday afternoon.

They were ordered transferred to the Manila City Jail by Judge Marivic Balisi-Umali of the Manila Regional Trial Court Branch 20, who rejected their plea to stay locked up at the NBI out of apprehensions for their safety at the city prison.

The fraternity members who were brought to the city jail were Arvin Balag, Mhin Wei Chan, Axel Munro Hipe, Oliver John Audrey Onofre, Joshua Joriel Macabali, Ralph Trangia, Robin Ramos, Jose Miguel Salamat, Danielle Hans Mattew Rodrigo, and Marcelino Bagtang.

They surrendered together to NBI operatives on March 23, weeks after a panel of prosecutors at the Department of Justice found probable cause to charge them in court for violation of the Anti-Hazing Act of 1995. —KBK, GMA News
