Younger Marcoses don't want to join politics, Imee claims

The younger generation of Marcoses have no interest in entering politics, Ilocos Norte Governor Imee Marcos said Friday as she admitted that their family were having a hard time who to field for the 2019 elections.

“The family wants someone to run next year, pero hindi pa nagdedesisyon kasi ang tagal-tagal nga, super bagal naman ‘yung kay Bongbong,” Marcos said referring to the electoral protest filed by her brother, former Senator Ferdinand Marcos Jr, against Vice President Leni Robredo.

“‘Yung mga bata na ayaw magsitakbo, mga walang pakisama,” she said in jest.

Asked to elaborate, the Ilocos Norte governor said the younger Marcoses probably do not want to dabble in politics being fully aware of what their older relatives went through while in government service.

“Sa palagay ko hindi mo naman (masisita) ‘yung mga bata. Ang tindi rin naman kasi n’ung pinagdaanan namin. Siguro ayaw nila ng ganun at nagnanais sila ng mas simpleng buhay na manahimik na lamang,” she said.

However, she said that she and Bongbong have the same attitude during her younger years but they later decided to join politics.

“Ganun rin kami nu’ng umpisa ni Bongbong. Ayaw na ayaw namin kasi ang gulo gulo ng pulitika pero sa bandang huli siyempre may responsibilidad ka, tinitingala ka ng mga tao, umaasa sila sa’yo ng trabaho at kung ano ano pang serbisyo. So in the end, naoobliga ka talaga eh na magserve kahit papaano kasi ikaw lang naman inaasahan nila,” she said.

Marcos said the family would most likely make a decision on who will run in October during the filing of the certificate of candidacy.

For the meantime, she said she is making the rounds to know what is happening in other parts of the country.

“Ako ‘yung umiikot dahil nakaluklok na ako sa Ilocos Norte, probinsiyanang certified na talaga ako ng walong taon. Kaya naman kailangang umikot nang konti para malaman kung anong nangyayari sa ibang lugar,” she said.

“Wala pang final? Food trip lang lahat. Kinakainan ko lahat ng parada, lahat ng fiesta. Higit sa lahat yung food festival ng Las Piñas,” she added, referring to the cooking showdown sponsored by Senator Cynthia Villar.

Asked if she personally wanted to seek a Senate seat, she said: “I’m not dying to be a senator kasi nasanay rin ako sa local executive. Masaya sa probinsiya.”

Villar earlier said that Marcos will be seeking a Senate post in the midterm polls. — MDM, GMA News
