Journalist Nestor Mata, 92, passes away

Veteran journalist Nestor Mata passed away on Thursday afternoon, his son Jan Mata said in a Facebook post.

"At 2:07 pm today, veteran journalist Nestor Mata passed away at the age of 92," Jan wrote on Thursday.

Mata started as a reporter for the Philippine Herald. He later became executive editor of Lifestyle Asia Magazine, columnist of Manila Standard, and columnist of Malaya.

He was the lone survivor when the plane bearing President Ramon Magsaysay crashed on Mt. Manunggal in Cebu in 1957.

The Museo ni Ramon Magsaysay expressed condolences in a Facebook post.

According to Jan, the wake for Mata will start on Friday at St. Peter Chapels on Commonwealth Avenue in Quezon City.

Mata's other son Mike said on Facebook that interment will be on Tuesday at the Himlayang Pilipino in Quezon City. —KG, GMA News
