Protesters burn swastika effigy of Trump

Protesters burned an effigy of US President Donald Trump on Monday a few moments after clashes broke out between police and anti-Trump groups on Padre Faura in Manila.

A report on GMA News' Balitanghali showed the effigy—four rotating arms in the shape of a swastika, with the hands clutching a nuclear bomb, a bag of money, a excavator's shovel and a gun—with Trump's scowling face in the middle.

Activists protesting Trump's attendance at the 31st Association of Southeast Asian Nations Summit clashed with the police as they attempted to reach the US Embassy on Roxas Boulevard.

Police dispersal teams were forced to use water cannons to stop the group.

The clash happened as President Rodrigo Duterte opened the summit at the Cultural Center of the Philippines.

National Capital Region Police Office chief Director General Oscar Albayalde said they counted only six policemen hurt because the other officers only suffered minor bruises.

Albayalde said the six policemen have been sent to the hospital.

He urged the protesters not to be violent.

“Ang sabi nga ng ating pangulo, they can protest with or without any permit, pero hindi naman sinabi ng ating presidente na they can protest with violence. 'Yun lang naman ang pinapakiusap natin sa kanila,” he said. — Joseph Tristan Roxas/BM, GMA News
