Ex-Task Force Davao commander Guerrero assumes post as AFP chief of staff


Lieutenant General Rey Leonardo Guerrero on Thursday took over the helm of the Armed Forces of the Philippines as its 49th chief of staff.

President Rodrigo Duterte led the change of command ceremony at Camp Aguinaldo.

In his speech, Guerrero said that under his helm, the AFP will prioritize finishing terrorist groups, neutralizing the communist threat, and supporting law enforcement agencies against lawless elements.

“The priorities are clear,  finish the remaining terrorist groups, neutralize the communist insurgency threat, and support law enforcement agencies in efforts against lawless armed groups,” he said.

Guerrero said he intends to use the might of the AFP to fulfill the priorities.

He pledged his fidelity to the flag and unwavering dedication to securing the peace as he take on the challenge of leading the AFP as chief of staff.

“My gratitude knows no bounds, my gratitude is to serve our country with selfless dedication and to lead AFP with purpose,” he said.

Prior to his appointment to the military top post, Guerrero headed the Davao-based Eastern Mindanao Command.

He is a member of the Philippine Military Academy “Maharlika” Class of 1984.

Guerrero is a seasoned field commander who once headed the Army's 3rd Infantry Division commander, the 701st Infantry Brigade, and the Task Force Davao. He alse served as Army chief of staff.

He is a four-time recipient of the Distinguished Service Star; Order of Lakan Dula (Degree of Commander); Philippine Legion of Honor (Degree of Officer); and Honorary  Airborne Wings from the Royal Thai Army, among others.

Present during the ceremony were Vice President Leni Robredo, and former Presidents Fidel Ramos and Gloria Macapagal-Arroyo, also an incumbent member of the House of Representatives. —NB/RSJ, GMA News
