Ex-Caloocan police chief says Kian’s drug ties confirmed via social media

Former Caloocan City police chief Senior Superintendent Chito Bersaluna on Thursday said the police were able to confirm that Kian Loyd Delos Santos was involved in illegal drugs based on “social media.”

“We also based it on sa mga lumalabas sa mga ano sa social media ... meron ding mga nagsasabi. Yun lang po ang basis namin, sir,” Bersaluna said during the Senate public order committee hearing on Kian's death.

Asked by Senator Manny Pacquiao how they were able to confirm the allegations, Bersaluna said: “Based on social media.”

“Napakababaw na dahilan na based on social media,” Pacquiao retorted.

For his part, Senator Joel Villanueva said Bersaluna’s statement was infuriating.

“Sinabi n’yo you confirmed his involvement through social media, hindi ko po talaga matanggap. Talagang nakakagalit po. I think you have to be careful with what you say,” Villanueva told Bersaluna.

“Hindi po ako magulang ni Kian pero n’ung marinig ko ‘yun gusto kong itanong sa PNP, for example, how many operations of PNP are based on social media. Kasama po ba ito sa proseso na sinusunod ng PNP,” he said.

Bersaluna clarified that what he said was that he already saw on social media the details stated by the drug suspect they arrested a day after Delos Santos was killed.

“Bale, sir, ang pagkakasabi ko po e yung kay Nono nakikita ko sa social media,” he said.

Villanuevar told the police official not to believe everything posted on social media.

“Don’t base everything sa social media. Kaya nga sinasabi natin na importante ang intelligence report, kaya nga ang report nilagyan ng intelligence para siguraduhin na may laman ang intelligence,” said Villanueva.

Bersaluna was relieved from his post last week following the public outrage over the death of Delos Santos, a 17-year-old Grade 12 student.

Policemen claimed that Delos Santos shot them as he was trying to escape during an anti-drugs operation in Barangay 160.

Witnesses, however, claimed that Delos Santos was summarily executed by the policemen. — RSJ, GMA News
