Civilians on rescue, relief missions defy PNP checkpoint in Marawi City

Some civilians defied the checkpoint set up by the PNP in Marawi to rescue loved ones still in the city proper and to bring relief to residents still holed up in the area.

According to Emil Sumangil's report on "24 Oras", no one is allowed to enter the city proper without clearance from the Armed Forces.

One of the vehicles that slipped past the PNP cordon was shot at by the police.

It later returned to the checkpoint.

One of the passengers was former Marawi City councilor Khana Anuar Marabur Jr., who said he had to rescue his grandfather who was trapped in the city.

"Kahit mamatay kami siguro kukunin namin siya," Marabur said.

Hadji Ali Magarang said he saw members of the Maute group as late as Saturday.

"Sabado yata yun... Nandun pa sila," Magarang said.

The report said it was still dangerous to enter the city proper.

Two bombs were detonated on Sunday after they were recovered by the PNP Special Action Force.

An apartment that was reportedly used as quarters by the Maute group is now abandoned but bore marks of heavy fire.

Police recovered guns and ammunition from the area. —NB, GMA News
