Former senator Leticia Ramos-Shahani laid to rest


Former diplomat and senator Leticia Ramos-Shahani was laid to rest on Monday at the Manila Memorial Park in Sucat, Parañaque City.

Soldiers gave Shahani a 21-gun salute to honor her service to the nation.

 

 

Relatives and friends were able to give their last respects before the interment.

 

 

Earlier on Monday, the Brahma Kumaris held a service for Shahani.

 

 

Former President Fidel V. Ramos, Shahani's brother, was in attendance.

 

 

Singer Grace Nono rendered a heartwarming song during the service.

 

 

Pallbearers brought out the coffin after the service for the midday interment.

 

 

Shahani passed away on March 20 after battling cancer. She was 87.

Aside from serving as senator from 1987 to 1998, Shahani was also ambassador to Australia and held positions at the United Nations such as secretary general of the World Conference on the United Nations Decade of Women in Kenya in 1986, and UN Assistant Secretary-General for Social and Humanitarian Affairs. 

She has championed women's issues and initiated and advocated for the Moral Recovery Program in the government. —KG, GMA News
