After leading the Rizal Day commemoration rites in Manila, President Rodrigo Duterte on Friday flew to Hilongos, Leyte to visit the victims of the IED explosion during the town's fiesta.

Upon his arrival at the Hilongos District Hospital, Duterte gave victims cash assistance.

He also gave a cellphone to one of the young victims.

"Salig lang mo sa pulis ug militar [Just trust the police and the military]," he told a crowd before leaving Leyte.

"Salig lang mo kay ako na ang gasulti ninyo, nagatrabaho na sila and they would protect you [Just trust them because I'm telling you, they are working and they would protect you]," he added.

On December 28, at least 23 were rushed to the hospital after a pair of improvised explosive devices (IEDs) exploded during a boxing match near the Hilongos municipal plaza in Leyte.

In his media interviews on Thursday, Duterte linked the bombing to drugs.

National Defense Secretary Delfin Lorenzana said that bandit Maute group was likely responsible for the explosion. —NB, GMA News
