Signal jammers to be installed at Bilibid's Building 14

Two signal jammers will be installed on Tuesday at the New Bilibid Prison in Muntinlupa City to stem the drug transactions and other illegal activities in the national penitentiary.

Donated by an unnamed Filipino businessman, the jammers, which have the capability to block cellphone, internet, and television signals, were presented to the media at the Department of Justice on Monday.

Manufactured in South Korea, the jammers cost P2 million each, according to Justice Secretary Vitaliano Aguirre II.

Aguirre said the jammers will be installed in Building 14, where high-profile inmates, including those who testified on Senator Leila De Lima's alleged drug links, are detained.

Building 14 sits on a 1,200-square meter lot in the nine-hectare prison community, which houses thousands of convicted criminals who are guarded by a Special Action Force (SAF) battalion.

Aguirre said they still need more signal jammers to cover the whole NBP. —Virgil Lopez/KBK, GMA News
