Who are buried at the Libingan ng mga Bayani?
Talks are rife about the impending burial next month of the late President Ferdinand Marcos at the Philippines' national cemetery, the Libingan ng mga Bayani (LNMB, Cemetery of Heroes) in Taguig City.
Marcos passed away on Sep. 28, 1989 while in exile in Honolulu, Hawaii but his remains have not yet been buried and have been kept in a mausoleum in Ilocos Norte.
For decades, his family has been pushing for his burial at the Libingan, the final resting place of World War II soldiers, Filipino military personnel, heroes, and presidents.
According to the website of the local government of Taguig, LNMB (then named Republic Memorial Cemetery) was established in May 1947 as a tribute to more than 33,500 Filipinos who fought during the Second World War.
On Oct. 27, 1954, the cemetery was renamed "Libingan ng Mga Bayani" by the late President Ramon Magsaysay.
Then on May 28, 1967, Marcos issued Presidential Proclamation No. 208 reserving a 142-hectare area from the Fort Bonifacio Military Reservation for a national shrine for heroes. — Veronica Pulumbarit and Jannielyn Ann Bigtas/RSJ, GMA News
