Who is Joseph Goebbels and why did VP Binay keep mentioning him in the debate?
During the Cebu leg of the PiliPinas Debates 2016 on Sunday, Vice President Jejomar Binay kept mentioning Joseph Goebbels, saying that his rivals Grace Poe and Mar Roxas were disciples of the man.
Roxas, for his part, chided Binay for bringing up Goebbels several times, saying it was the vice president who knew and followed Goebbels.
But who exactly is Goebbels and what has he got to do with anything?
Goebbels was the chief propagandist of the Nazi regime in Germany. He was tasked with presenting Adolf Hitler to the masses in the most favorable light.
He regulated all German media, from newspapers, radio, film, theatre, literature, music and arts. He also burned books that were considered “un-German.”
He is infamous for having supposedly said, “If you tell a lie big enough and keep repeating it, people will eventually come to believe it. The lie can be maintained only for such time as the State can shield the people from the political, economic and/or military consequences of the lie. It thus becomes vitally important for the State to use all of its powers to repress dissent, for the truth is the mortal enemy of the lie, and thus by extension, the truth is the greatest enemy of the State.”
This has been shown to be a misattribution, however.
So why did Binay keep mentioning him during the debate? You be the judge. —Kierrsner Gerwin Tacadena/JST/TJD, GMA News
