PILIPINAS DEBATES 2016

Fact Check: Did Miriam's son no longer run for another post?

During Sunday's presidential debate, Sen. Miriam Defensor Santiago countered an assertion by Vice President Jejomar Binay that she had a son holding an elective position.

"Ang anak ko, tumakbo na party-list representative. After one term, he did not run for another post," said the feisty senator.

Santiago was telling the truth when she said that her son, former Rep. Narciso Santiago III, no longer sought re-election after his brief, three-year stint in Congress as representative of Alliance for Rural Concerns (ARC) party-list from 2007 to 2010.

VERDICT: TRUE, but...

While her mother claims that he did not run for another post, the younger Santiago is currently a candidate under a party-list once more in the 2016 elections. He is listed as the first nominee of the Sinag Tungo sa Kaunlaran (SINAG) party-list in May.

Narciso's first stint in Congress was a controversial one.

It was Santiago who swore in her son when his party-list won a seat in Congress in the 2007 polls. Narciso assumed his post as ARC's lone party-list representative despite its announcement that he had been expelled because the party-list had lost its confidence in him. The group also accused the younger Santiago of dishonesty, unauthorized exercise of authority and gross violations of the group's Constitution and by-laws.

Despite the controversy, Narciso was able to finish his term in 2010.

During the debate, the senator accurately said that she currently has no other family member in government service. —JST, GMA News
