EcoWaste to Canada: We are not your trash bin

Environmental group EcoWaste Coalition on Thursday urged President Benigno Aquino III before he left for his state visit to Canada to bring with him the issue of Canada's garbage shipment to our bays.

 

Fifty garbage-filled container vans have been sitting in Subic and Manila ports posing health hazards for more than three years.

 

The group said they failed to get an assurance that the "stinking issue" will be included in Aquino's diplomatic agenda in Canada.

 

EcoWaste protested in front of the Canadian Embassy on Thursday to demand the reimportation of the garbage to Canada and point out its violation of the Basel Convention on the Control of Transboundary Movements of Hazardous Wastes and Their Disposal, and our own RA 6969 or the Toxic Substances and Hazardous Wastes Control Act.

 

Aquino is in the US as of posting time and will arrive in Canada on Thursday. He will stay there until May 9. —KG, GMA News
