On Jan. 25, the Philippine National Police-Special Action Force launched Oplan Exodus, a covert mission to serve warrants of arrests to high-value terrorists Malaysian bomb maker Zulkifli Bin Hir alias Marwan and Filipino bomb maker Basit Usman in Mamasapano, Maguindanao.
The commandos, however, found themselves in firefights with the Moro Islamic Liberation Front and its breakaway Bangsamoro Islamic Freedom Fighters. Forty-four policemen were killed while 18 died from among the MILF fighters during the "misencounter." Five civilians were also dead after the operation.
Marwan was killed during the assault, but Usman remains at large.
The recently released report of the Board of Inquiry broke down the events that led to the death of Marwan, who's described as the Osama Bin Laden of Southeast Asia, as told by Main Effort's leader Superintendent Raymond Train during his debriefing. —Trisha Macas/NB, GMA News
