After meeting with top government officials, Pope heads for Mass with ranking church officials
(Updated 11:04 a.m.) After meeting with top government officials in Malacañang, Pope Francis headed for the Manila Cathedral for a gathering with top officials, this time of the Philippine Catholic Church.
Pope Francis, who paid a courtesy call on officials led by President Benigno Aquino III, headed for Intramuros at 10:45 a.m., radio dzBB's Benjie Liwanag Jr. reported.
This time, he used the Popemobile, a white customized pickup truck he used in heading for the Apostolic Nunciature from Villamor Air Base.
Some in the crowd who waited to see him shed tears of joy upon seeing the Pope in person.
"Naluluha ako, sobrang tuwa ako. We love the Pope, the people of the Philippines. I hope he will always remember the Philippines and the Filipino people," a woman who cried told dzBB's Liwanag.
A separate report by dzBB's Manny Vargas said the Pope waved to people who lined the streets en route to the Cathedral.
He made eye contact at some in the crowd who were wheelchair-bound.
Earlier, the Pope was late for his 9:15 a.m. call on Aquino, as he smiled, waved and reached out to Filipinos who lined the streets from the Nunciature leading to the Palace.
He rode in a black Volkswagen minivan during the trip to Malacañan Palace.
At the Manila Cathedral, the Pope is to preside over a Mass for bishops, priests and the religious.
Waiting for the Pope at the cathedral are children dressed as Swiss guards, as shown in a photo by dzBB's Cecilia Villarosa.
