PNoy leaves for Korea for ASEAN-Korea Summit

President Benigno Aquino III on Thursday morning left for Korea to attend the Association of Southeast Asian Nations-Republic of Korea Summit.

Aquino delivered a speech at the Ninoy Aquino International Airport before boarding his flight, radio dzBB's Benjie Liwanag Jr. reported.

He is to return Friday, the report said.

Earlier, a Palace statement said Aquino will join his fellow ASEAN leaders for the summit, to be held on December 11 to 12 in celebration of 25 years of relations between the ASEAN and South Korea.

On December 11, Aquino is scheduled to have a bilateral meeting with his South Korean counterpart, President Park Geun-hye.

While in Busan, Aquino is also expected to attend an exhibition on Korean traditional arts and crafts, a special exhibition on public governance, and a meet-and-greet with the chief executive officer of Korea Aerospace Industries and ROK officials.

On Monday, deputy presidential spokesperson Abigail Valte said Aquino was skipping the Korea trip so he could focus on government efforts for the victims of Typhoon Ruby.

At the time, Valte said Aquino will just send Cabinet Secretary Rene Almendras and Finance Secretary Cesar Purisima to the summit in Busan, South Korea.

But on Tuesday, Malacañang said Aquino was pushing through with his trip.

"This trip will afford the President the opportunity to articulate the Philippine position on issues of both national and global importance, including those connected to climate risk and disaster preparedness, and the dangers posed by the Ebola virus," Valte said. — Joel Locsin/RSJ, GMA News
