Party-list rep, 4 mayors named ‘champions of good governance’

A multi-sectoral movement on Sunday named new "champions of good governance" at Club Filipino in Greenhills, San Juan.

Kaya Natin! Movement for Good Governance and Ethical Leadership selected Anak Mindanao (AMIN) partylist representative Sitti Turabin-Hataman; mayor Sandy Javier of Javier, Leyte; mayor Jun Evasco of Maribojoc, Bohol; mayor Lorna Vero of Llanera, Nueva Ecija; and mayor Len Oreta of Malabon City based on the movement's 3Es criteria of effective, ethical, and empowering leadership.

The Kaya Natin champions of good governance for 2014 take their oath, from L-R: Mayor Lorna Vero of Llanera, Nueva Ecija, Mayor Jun Evasco of Maribijoc, Bohol, AMIN Party list Rep. Sitti Turabin-Hataman and Mayor Len Oreta of Malabon City. Kaya Natin
AMIN Rep. Hataman is an advocate of women’s rights and peace and development in Mindanao. She is known to help Moro women become effective leaders in the government.

When super typhoon Yolanda hit Eastern Visayas last year, businessman-turned-politician Javier of Javier, Leyte put up a relief and rehabilitation plan for his municipality within 24 hours. Now, he shares what he has learned in disaster risk reduction management with other local government units.

Aside from leading efforts in his town after a magnitude-7 earthquake shook Central Visayas in 2013, Evasco also led Maribojoc, Bohol in winning the Gawad Galing Pook Awards for outstanding local government units in 2011.

Under Vero, Llanera in Nueva Ecija has streamlined its issuance of the necessary government permits to do business in their town. Getting the necessary documents was made easier for investors, which in return attracted more businesses and opened up jobs in Llanera.

When Oreta became mayor of Malabon in 2012, he made transparency and education a priority in the city. In Malabon City's website, visitors can access financial reports such as results of bidding and procurement. Oreta also made sure that every child in Malabon gets to finish basic education.

Led by Senator Teofisto Guingona III, the five Kaya Natin champions pledged and promised to shun all forms of illegalities and take a more active role in the promotion of good governance in the Philippines.

Kaya Natin is chaired by former Pampanga governor Among Ed Panlilio. Its board members include Guingona, Camarines Sur representative Leni Gerona Robredo, Jim Paredes, Jess Lorenzo, and councilor Amie Malabag-Hernandez of Nagcarlan, Laguna. —Trisha Macas/KG, GMA News
