Canada advises nationals: Avoid areas Typhoon Glenda may hit
Canada on Monday night advised its nationals to avoid areas that may be hit by the heavy rain and flooding brought by Typhoon Glenda (Rammasun).
In an update to its travel advice on the Philippines, the Canadian government said Typhoon Glenda is expected to sweep the southern and central Luzon areas including Metro Manila.
"Heavy rains are expected and flooding may affect some regions. Stay informed of regional weather forecasts, avoid disaster areas, and follow the advice of local authorities," it said.
It also said flooding may be frequent following heavy rain, "even in central Manila."
"Be careful when moving around cities during extreme weather conditions as roads can quickly become flooded and impassable," it said.
The Canadian government also pointed out the Philippines experiences around 20 cyclones per year, usually between June and November.
Such cyclones "can result in significant loss of life and extensive damage to infrastructure, and can hamper the provision of essential services," it said.
"Heavy winds and rains make flash-flooding and landslides a significant threat. Telecommunications and transportation (air, sea and land) can also be affected," it said.
On Tuesday, Storm Signal No. 3 was hoisted over Catanduanes, Albay, Sorsogon, Camarines Sur, Burias and Ticao Islands, and Northern Samar as Typhoon Glenda was spotted 270 km east of Legazpi City, moving westwards at 20 kph as of 4 a.m. Tuesday, weather service PAGASA said.
If it maintains its speed and direction, Glenda is projected to make landfall over the Albay-Sorsogon area Tuesday night. —Joel Locsin/KG, GMA News
