Manny Pacquiao still richest congressman

(Updated 10:23 a.m.) Despite a P400 million drop in his wealth from 2012, Sarangani Rep. Manny Pacquiao remains the lone billionaire—and still the richest member—of the House of Representatives with a net worth of P1.3 billion as of December 2013.

Based on the summary of the House members' statements of assets, liabilities and net worth (SALNs) posted online, Pacquiao had real properties worth P1.1 billion, personal properties worth P763 million and liabilities worth P527 million.

In 2012, the Filipino boxing champ declared a net worth of P1.7 billion.

Ilocos Norte Rep. Imelda Marcos, wife of the late President Ferdinand Marcos, retained her standing as the second richest House member, with her net worth of P922 million remaining unchanged from 2012.

House Speaker Feliciano Belmonte Jr. remained the third richest congressman, with his net worth last year rising to P819 million from P817 million in 2012.

Rounding up the Top 5 list of richest House members are Negros Occidental Reps. Alfredo Benitez and Julio Ledesma IV. Benitez declared a net worth of P713 million, while Ledesma declared P617 million.

Aside from Hicap, only four lawmakers in the lower House had a net worth of less than P1 million.

They are:
  • Abakada party-list Rep. Jonathan Dela Cruz (P550,000);
  • Dinagat Islands Rep. Arlene Bag-ao (P598,012);

Under Republic Act 6770 or the Code of Conduct and Ethical Standards for Public Officials, all government officials are required under oath to list down all their assets and liabilities in the official document known as the SALN. It is supposed to be submitted by April 30 of each year. —KG, GMA News
