After challenges of 2013, CBCP chief calls for new start in 2014
After experiencing various challenges in 2013 that included deadly quakes and typhoons, violence and corruption, Catholic bishops are praying for a new start for Filipinos in 2014.
Catholic Bishops' Conference of the Philippines president Archbishop Socrates Villegas said that while Filipinos look at 2013 with gratitude for its blessings, they look forward to 2014 with hope for the best.
In its “Fourth Quarter 2013 Social Weather Survey,” pollster Social Weather Stations found out that 94 percent of Filipinos are entering the New Year with hope instead of fear.
"Behold the Lord makes all things new. God of new beginnings, we look at the year behind us with gratitude for its blessings. We look at the new year eagerly, hoping for the best to come. We believe in His tender love, secure in the embrace of the Son!" Villegas said in his New Year message.
He particularly prayed for an end to kidnappings, terrorism and violence and the conversion of the corrupt, as well as healing for victims of super Typhoon Yolanda (Haiyan).
Yolanda had left more than 6,100 dead.
"We pray for an end to kidnappings, we pray that violence stop. We beg for the end of terrorism and the conversion of the corrupt. We pray for peace in Syria, healing for every troubled heart. We pray for typhoon victims that they can soon rise up and start," said Villegas, who is also Lingayen-Dagupan archbishop.
A separate article on the CBCP news site said Villegas called for a "life of conversion" where people abandon their old and evil ways as they welcome the new year.
The prelate also called for welcoming 2014 with a positive disposition.
Feast of Mary
In his message, Villegas also noted Jan. 1 is the Feast of Mary.
Jan. 1 is also the feast of peace, "that all may live as one, We pray that war may end and hunger may be gone," he added.
"We pray that the reign of terror and the power of each gun, Be melted by the mercy of God and the Blood of His only Son!" Villegas said.
"We greet each one Happy New Year! We greet each other 'Peace.' We say together 'Ave Maria!' Hail Jesus Prince of Peace!" he added. —KG, GMA News
