PNoy gives context of Roxas' ‘You're a Romualdez’ comment

President Benigno Aquino III has attempted to explain the context of Department of Interior and Local Government Secretary Mar Roxas' “You're a Romualdez, he's an Aquino” comment to Tacloban City Mayor Alfred Romualdez.

In a media briefing in Tokyo, Japan, Aquino said Romualdez and Roxas had been discussing which relief and rehabilitation efforts should be done by the local government, and which ones the national government should handle.

“The budget of the [Department of Public Works and Highways] normally is meant only for national infrastructure, and hindi natin maaalis (na) pinsan niya miyembro ng minority at saka opposition. Baka naman maayos na natin lahat yan, (tapos) mag-kwestyon sila. 'Why did you use national funds on a city street?',” Aquino said.

“So, magkakaroon ng dagdag na kulay dahil na nga nagkataon na miyembro kami ng mga pamilyang ito. So, ang ipinapakiusap lang ni Secretary Roxas at that time, 'pwede ba nating iliwanag lang ito?'”

Aquino also expressed resentment to the Tacloban local government for not taking on the roles it said it would.

However, both Aquino and Romualdez said focus should shift from the political media war to the rehabilitation and relief efforts in Tacloban and other affected areas. — Kim Luces/JDS, GMA News
