NDRRMC: Death toll from monsoon rain rises to 30; 2 areas in state of calamity


The death toll from heavy monsoon rain that pounded parts of Luzon earlier this week rose to 30 as of Wednesday night, the National Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Council said.

At least two areas are in state of calamity due to the rain – Busuanga in Palawan, and Olongapo City in Zambales.

In its 8 p.m. update posted on its website early Thursday, the NDRRMC said 29 of the fatalities are from Zambales, and another one from Bataan.

Also, the NDRRMC said the monsoon rain affected 37,910 families or 167,367 people in 215 villages in 23 towns and 11 cities in five provinces.

Of these, 5,100 families or 21,507 people are staying in 88 evacuation centers.

The incidents recorded included nine landslides in Subic, San Marcelino and Castillejos in Zambales; Talisay, Tuy and Cuenca in Batangas; and Ternate,  Cavite and Busuanga, Palawan.

As of Wednesday night, the NDRRMC said at least 54 areas remained flooded, as floods in Bulacan, Cavite, Rizal and Laguna had subsided. — LBG, GMA News
