PAGASA chief Graciano Yumul retires from government service
(Updated 12:05 p.m.) Science Undersecretary Dr. Graciano Yumul has retired from government service effective Monday, March 12.
In a text message to GMA News Online, Yumul, also the officer-in-charge of the Philippine Atmospheric Geophysical and Astronomical Services Administration, said he has “optionally retired from government service.”
Yumul also expressed gratitude to the public for their support for the Department of Science and Technology (DOST).
“Maraming salamat po sa mga naitulong ninyo at sana ay ipagpatuloy niyo pagtulong sa DOST,” he said in a text message.
Meanwhile in a press statement, Science Secretary Mario Montejo said he accepted Yumul’s resignation due to personal reasons “with deep regret.”
“With almost 28 years of service in government, Undersecretary Yumul’s career path as professor, scientist, and executive was marked by excellence and dedication and duly recognized by peers from government, academe, and the private sector,” he said.
He added Yumul left a rich legacy in the DOST for others to follow and emulate.
“I wish him all the best in his future planned endeavors,” Montejo said. Ninth exec to leave since June 2010
Yumul is the ninth government official to resign since President Benigno Aquino III took office in June 2010.
Others who quit their posts were Alberto Romulo, a carryover from the Arroyo administration whom Aquino retained as Foreign Affairs secretary; Merceditas Gutierrez as Ombudsman; Jose Melo as Commission on Elections chairman; and Civil Aviation Authority of the Philippines Director General Alfonso Cusi. Gutierrez, Melo and Cusi were also Arroyo appointees.
Last year, Transportation Secretary Jose de Jesus resigned from his post. His resignation occurred on the same week Bureau of Corrections chief Ernesto Diokno, also an Aquino appointee, quit his government post following the controversy involving the alleged special treatment given to former Batangas Governor Antonio Leviste, a convicted killer.
Deputy Ombudsman Mark Jalandoni also quit his post last year after three complaints were filed against him before the Office of the President for alleged usurpation of authority, among others
