Loren on former hubby Leviste's conviction: Let justice be served

MANILA, Philippines -"Let justice be served." This was the reaction of Senator Loren Legarda Wednesday on the decision handed by the Makati regional trial court Branch 150 to her former husband, former Batangas governor Jose Antonio Leviste. Legarda gave her short statement in a text message sent to GMANews.TV. Earlier in the day, Judge Elmo Alameda meted Leviste the penalty of reclusion temporal or 6 to 12 years imprisonment for homicide. Leviste is accused of killing his longtime aide - Rafael de las Alas - on Jan. 12, 2007 although he maintained to have shot him in self defense. The two had engaged in a heated argument inside Leviste's office at the LPL Tower in Makati City. Leviste was also ordered to indemnify the de las Alas family of P50,000 and an additional P50,000 in moral damages. As of posting time, a radio report said Leviste had arrived at the Makati City Jail still accompanied by his lawyers. Leviste is expected to appeal the decision before the Court of Appeals. - Amita Legaspi, GMANews.TV
