Cop hurt as 5 riders arrested for drag racing in Manila

One cop was injured when the Manila Police District (MPD) arrested five motorcycle riders involved in an illegal drag racing event along Roxas Boulevard in Manila.
In a 24 Oras report by Jhomer Apresto on Wednesday, the suspects on Tuesday evening turned the portion of Roxas Blvd. from the corner of Pedro Gil to Remedios Street into a track where they would bet P50,000 to 100,000 per race.
The MPD said the suspects fled in different directions when authorities attempted to arrest them.
“During the pursuit, one suspect deliberately ran over a police officer to evade arrest. However, the suspect lost control of his motorcycle, slipped, and crashed on the pavement, which resulted in his immediate arrest,” police said.
Authorities said the riders posed a danger to themselves and the general public as the busy road is also used by large cargo trucks.
Meanwhile, the other four suspects allegedly resisted arrest and tried to escape on their motorcycles but were later caught.
The MPD said the injured police officer suffered a head injury and a broken left leg. He was brought to the hospital for medical attention and is under observation.
The arrested suspects were also brought to the hospital for physical examination before they were turned over to the Ermita Police Station.
The rider who tried to run over the cop is facing a frustrated murder charge while all of the suspects will be filed complaints of serious resistance and disobedience to a person of authority, as well as alarm and scandal.
They are set to undergo inquest proceedings before the Manila City Prosecutor's Office. — Mariel Celine Serquiña/RF, GMA Integrated News
