Man hits cop with rock on head during Malate arrest

A 32-year-old man is facing charges after he hit a policeman with a rock in Malate, Manila while he was being arrested for carrying a knife.

In John Consulta’s exclusive report on “24 Oras” on Monday, CCTV footage showed patrolling policemen were chasing the suspect on the street early Saturday morning.

At one point, the suspect was seen throwing rocks at his pursuers.

Police eventually cornered the suspect and tackled him, but he fought back and struck one of the lawmen with a sharp rock.

The police arrested the suspect, who was previously detained due to robbery charges. A knife was also seized from him.

Meanwhile, one of the responding policemen sustained a severe wound on his head.

The suspect admitted he sniffed solvent and planned to stab someone before he was arrested.

He said he intended to stab an enemy for being a liar and engaging in estafa.

The suspect then asked for the policeman’s forgiveness.

He underwent inquest proceedings and will be facing charges of direct assault and illegal possession of a bladed weapon.

“Iimbestigahan pa 'to natin kung mayroon na siyang mga dating kaso o may kinasangkutan na siya na ibang mga krimen,” said Police Brigadier General Arnold Thomas Ibay, Manila Police District director.

(We will investigate if he is facing other charges or is involved in other crimes.)
