LTO suspends Angkas chief's license for blocking traffic in Rizal

The Land Transportation Office (LTO) said on Monday that it suspended for 90 days the driver’s license of Angkas chief executive officer George Royeca after a convoy of its motorcycle riders obstructed traffic at an intersection in Cainta, Rizal two weeks ago.

“90 days preventive suspension. I stand corrected,” said LTO chief Vigor Mendoza II in a text message to GMA News Online.

It was earlier reported that the riders blocked motorists despite a green traffic light, ignoring honking protests from frustrated drivers. A truck was also prevented from crossing.

Royeca issued a public apology, acknowledging the riders' lack of discipline, disregard for safety, and non-compliance with traffic rules—values the company declares to uphold.

“I take full responsibility. There are no excuses for our actions. Ako po ay nagpapakumbaba at humihingi ng taus-pusong paumanhin sa publiko, sa ating mga mananakay, sa kapwa motorista at mga awtoridad. We will do better,” Royeca said.

(I take full responsibility. There are no excuses for our actions. I humble myself and I’m very sorry to the public, our commuters, our motorists, and the authorities.)

Cainta Mayor Elenita Nieto, meanwhile, sanctioned the motorcycle ride- hailing company , ordering community service as part of the penalty.

Royeca on Monday also personally went to the LTO to surrender his driver's license.

"As mentioned, I accept full responsibility. We take this matter seriously and respect due process," said Royeca in a Facebook post. "That is why we voluntarily went to the LTO office to receive and review the show cause order and surrender my license."

"Makakaasa po kayo na patuloy naming pagsisikapan na maibalik at mapatatag ang tiwala ng riding community."

(You can expect that we will strive to get back and strengthen the trust of the riding community.)

Mendoza earlier said he wanted to identify the riders who deliberately blocked the road so that they could explain why they should not be sanctioned ''for acting as if they are deputized by the government to manage traffic flow.''

He said what the riders displayed was a clear violation of the traffic rules and regulations, adding that they also showed abuse and lack of courtesy and discipline.—LDF, GMA Integrated News
