QC residents complain of stench from spoiled meat in burned warehouse

The stench of spoiled meat inside a burned cold storage facility in Barangay Del Monte, Quezon City has proven too much for residents.

According to Maki Pulido’s report in 24 Oras on Wednesday, frozen meat products stored in five freezers survived the January 20 fire. But the foul smell as they spoiled gradually mixed in the air.

“Akala namin amoy daga, naghahanapan kami ng patay na daga,” said Veronica Reganid of Barangay San Antonio.

(We thought the smell was coming from a dead rat, so we have been searching for a dead rat.)

The stench even reached Barangay Paraiso, which is two kilometers away from the storage facility.

“Naamoy pa rin kahit may mask,” said Nineta Valenzuela, adding the smell has affected their meals and sleep.

(We can still smell it even while wearing masks.)

“Masakit na nga ulo namin. Wala kaming tuloy na maayos e, ilang araw na kaming walang tulong na maayos,” she added.

(It’s already giving us headaches. We cannot sleep properly for several days because of the smell.)

The Quezon City government is already helping in the disposal of the spoiled meats. City personnel are also monitoring the disinfection and clean up of the warehouse.

Further, the city government issued a notice of violation against the management of the warehouse, Glacier North Refrigeration Storage.

“Ang amin pong hope is that by within five days, completely na po yung mawala yung mga apektadong mga karne. Ngayon po ay naglalagay sila ng mga apog at mga disinfectant para ma-mitigate ‘yung amoy,” said QC local government unit legal officer Carlo Austria.

(We hope that the rancid meat will be cleared within five days. Lime and disinfectants have been used to mitigate the bad stench.)

The QC government assured that results of the air quality test conducted showed that the air quality in the city is still safe despite the foul smell.

“Wala naman pong toxic particles na cause for health concern doon sa air quality po sa area,” said Austria.

(There were no toxic particles that would cause health concerns based on the air quality in the area.)
