AFP to deploy 1,000 servicemen to secure Nazareno 2025

Over 1,000 soldiers will assist the Philippine National Police (PNP) in securing the Feast of Jesus Nazareno in Manila, according to the Armed Forces of the Philippines (AFP) Joint Task Force-National Capital Region (JTF-NCR).

In a Saturday report by Christian Mano for Super Radyo dzBB, JTF-NCR Deputy Commander Colonel Rommel Recinto stated that personnel from the Philippine Navy, Army, and Marines would be stationed at the Quirino Grandstand for the traditional "Pahalik" and at key entry and exit points across Metro Manila.

The deployment aims to ensure the safety, security, and peace of the festivities, said Recinto. He also mentioned that a battalion of Marines would be on standby, ready for rapid deployment if needed.

Although the PNP has not identified any serious threats to the event, they have emphasized their commitment to maintaining vigilance.

Devotional activities

The Traslacion, a major part of the Feast of Jesus Nazareno, involves the procession of the 400-year-old image of Jesus Christ from the Quirino Grandstand to Quiapo Church. Millions of devotees are expected to join the celebration.

The Quiapo Church announced that this year’s procession on January 9 would follow the "traditional route."

The Philippine Red Cross will be fully mobilized for the event, deploying 500 volunteers to key areas along the Traslacion route.

The Red Cross would also set up 17 first aid stations along the route, with emergency medical teams consisting of doctors and nurses on standby.

Furthermore, 33 ambulances and 12 scooters will be available to respond to emergencies, especially in narrow areas.

Meanwhile, preparations for the "Pahalik," a tradition where devotees touch or kiss the image of Jesus Christ, have begun at the Quirino Grandstand.

According to a Super Radyo dzBB report by Sam Nielsen, the Metro Manila Development Authority (MMDA) has installed 30 tents to protect devotees from extreme weather.

The "Pahalik" will take place from January 7 to 9.

On Thursday, Catholic devotees gathered at the Quiapo Church for the Replica and Estandarte Blessing for the  Jesus Nazareno. The replicas were adorned with flowers, fruits, and vegetables, and the event was marked by singing and dancing. — DVM, GMA Integrated News
