105 truckloads of trash collected during Enteng —MMDA

Zapote Junction in Las Pinas was among the areas flooded due to Enteng. The MMDA reminded the public to properly dispose of their garbage.

The Metropolitan Manila Development Authority (MMDA) said on Wednesday that it has collected more than 100 truckloads worth of garbage in the capital region amid the onslaught of Severe Tropical Storm Enteng (international name: Yagi).

Of the said figure, a truckload of wastes were so far collected from the Manila Baywalk Dolomite Beach.

“During the Bagyong Enteng, simula September 1, nakakuha kami ng 105 truckloads ng basura,” said MMDA Flood Control and Sewerage Management Office Division chief Michael Doce in an interview with Bagong Pilipinas Ngayon.

(During Tropical Storm Enteng, we got 105 truckloads of garbage since September 1.)

“Dito sa dolomite [beach], mga 45 cubic meters ang naiahon namin, isang truckload. Hanggang sa ngayon nagkakaroon kami ng basura du'n sa dolomite dahil patuloy 'yung hanging Habagat na nagdadala ng basura,” he added.

(Meanwhile, here at the dolomite beach, we have collected 45 cubic meters or equivalent to a truckload. We are still collecting wastes at the dolomite beach because of the strong winds from Habagat.)

But the MMDA said that the heavy rainfall brought by Enteng had lesser impact on Metro Manila due to the 24/7 operations of the water pumping stations.

Still, the agency reminded the public to properly dispose of their garbage.

“'Yung MMDA naman o 'yung gobyerno ay nag-ano sa mga tao na 'yung disiplina sa pagtapon ng basura, na 'wag magtapon ng mga basura sa waterway. Tsaka 'yung sa pag-segregate ng basura, para mabawasan 'yung basurang itatapon natin sa landfill,” said Doce.

(The MMDA and the government remind the public to have discipline in disposing of their garbage and to avoid disposing of it in waterways. They should also practice proper waste segregation to lessen the ones we throw in the landfill.)

President Ferdinand Marcos Jr. on Tuesday called on local government units to address waste management in their localities in the aftermath of the tropical cyclone.

Enteng has already exited the Philippine Area of Responsibility on Wednesday morning.

However, the enhanced Southwest Monsoon will also bring moderate to intense rainfall in other areas of Luzon over the next three days, PAGASA said. —KG, GMA Integrated News
