EDSA-Kamuning flyover southbound reopens

The EDSA-Kamuning flyover - southbound lanes on Thursday have been reopened for motorists after being closed for three months due to retrofitting works.

Around 6 a.m., the barriers were removed and posters were set up advising motorists that all types of vehicles may now use the lanes, EJ Gomez reported on Unang Balita.

“Maaga po itong mabubuksan, two months ahead of schedule para madaanan na po ng ating mga kababayan,” MMDA chairperson Romando Artes said.

(It will be opened early, two months ahead of schedule so that our motorists can already pass through.)

The Metropolitan Manila Development Authority (MMDA) and Department of Public Works and Highways (DPWH) said the flyover meets the standards to withstand a possible “Big One” earthquake.

While the reopening of EDSA-Kamuning flyover is two months earlier than the target schedule, MMDA and DPWH officials said some work still needs to be done under the flyover in the next few weeks.

“Mas marami po tayong gagawin sa ilalim (We will do more under the flyover),” DPWH - National Capital Region director Lorie Malaluan said.

“Tapos na po ang paglalagay ng mga carbon fiber sheet. Ngayon po, ilalagay natin yung chain-type na restrainers para po masiguardo na during malakas na earthquake ay hindi hihiwalay yung substructure sa superstructure po nitong tulay na ito,” she added.

(The installation of the carbon fiber sheets has been completed. Now, we will install the chain type restrainers to ensure that during a strong earthquake, the substructure will not separate from the superstructure of this flyover.)

It is also proposed to pave the flyover with asphalt to have an even surface.

The EDSA-Kamuning flyover - southbound lanes were closed on May 1, 2024.

Due to this, motorists had to take alternative routes amid its closure. --Joviland Rita/ VAL, GMA Integrated News
