Heavy rains flood NLEX in Valenzuela, makes segment impassable

Heavy rains brought by the Habagat enhanced by Super Typhoon Carina caused massive flooding on the North Luzon Expressway and made a crucial portion of the highway impassable to all vehicles.

According to Jun Veneracion’s report on “24 Oras,” the flood rose quickly at the Valenzuela segment of the NLEX around 7 a.m. on Wednesday.

The downpour then caused both northbound and southbound lanes of the Valenzuela exit to rise as high as an average person's height.

Many motorists and passengers were stranded. Some tried to walk despite the flood while others just made a U-turn when they had the chance.

Vendors took the opportunity to make money as they sold food and drinks to the stranded passengers.

At around 3 p.m., a truck tried to cross the receding flood and other large vehicles followed.

Some managed to get through but some vehicles stopped in the middle of the expressway.

Carina became a super typhoon late Wednesday afternoon.

The National Capital Region was also placed under a state of calamity due to massive flooding. —Sherylin Untalan/NB, GMA Integrated News
