30 shanties swept away as Carina-enhanced Habagat hits Manila
Almost 30 shanties were swept away by strong waves in Puting Bato, Tondo, Manila amid the continuous downpours and rough coastal conditions caused by the Typhoon Carina-enhanced Habagat, Emil Sumangil reported Tuesday on 24 Oras.
Several residents were hurt as they tried to salvage their belongings despite the makeshift houses being almost fully submerged.
At least 20 houses along Road-10 in the Vitas area were also damaged by the heavy rain and strong winds.
The affected residents asked the Manila city government for financial aid to rebuild their houses.
Several locals had taken shelter at an evacuation center since Tuesday morning.
Among the residents who lost their homes was senior citizen Beatris Oviado.
She said she did not evacuate since she lived alone, and no one could look after her belongings.
Several other residents also chose to stay home and not evacuate, even as the walls of several houses were washed away by the waves.
Amid the inclement conditions, several residents and an emergency response team rescued a blind senior citizen who fell into the sea.
At least 100 families have been evacuated due to the bad weather.
Barangay kagawad Francisco Pagayunan sought help from the city government in behalf of the evacuees.
“Kahit pantawid lang nila, sa ngayon damit, meron na kaming damit, pero hindi sapat… para sa kanila, pagkain,” said Pagayunan.
(We are asking for clothes because we don't have enough. And food as well.)
The Manila Mayor's Office said they would aid the affected residents as soon as possible. — Mariel Celine Serquiña/DVM, GMA Integrated News
