Repairs on damaged floodgate in Navotas to begin next month - report

Dredging and repair work on the floodgate in the cities of Navotas and Malabon will start next month to prevent flooding during the rainy season.

In Joseph Morong’s report in “24 Oras” on Friday, dredging will start on August 2, Friday while the work on the repair on the navigational floodgate will follow.

“Hopefully by August 17, operational na ulit siya (navigational floodgate),” said Navotas lone district Rep. Toby Tiangco.

“Yung two weeks siyempre medyo pwede siyang maapektuhan ng weather, kung may papasok na bagyo…We’re keeping our fingers crossed na during the repair ay wala pong ganoong weather disturbance,” said Metropolitan Manila Development Authority chairperson Romando Artes.

(The two weeks of repair could be affected by weather conditions, especially if there is a typhoon…We’re keeping our fingers crossed that there will be no weather disturbance during the repair.)

The floodgate was damaged after a barge slammed into the floodgate last June 7, causing gutter-deep floods in Navotas and in Malabon.

The local governments of Navotas and Malabon are now hoping that the floodgate will soon be repaired before the wet season.

There are some 3,000 residents in four barangays in Malabon that are experiencing floods.

There are four to five barangays in Navotas that were initially flooded, but the most affected was Barangay Tanza where the navigational floodgate is located.
