Maynilad customers in Caloocan, Cavite to get rebates for poor water quality

Some customers of Maynilad Water Services, Inc. in Caloocan City and in Imus, Cavite would receive rebates on their water bills as a penalty to the west zone concessionaire for the poor water quality in the said areas.

The  Metropolitan Waterworks and Sewerage System (MWSS) said that the penalty is a reminder to water companies to provide quality water to their customers.

“If we don’t impose penalties this might happen again or if this will happen again, this will happen more and more. So if we impose penalties right now, they will learn to be more proactive and to ensure that this will be prevented,” said MWSS chief regulator Patrick Ty in Maki Pulido’s “24 Oras” report on Friday.

According to the report, the water supplied by Maynilad to parts of Caloocan City did not pass the national standard for drinking water after a random water sampling was conducted in the last quarter of 2023.

The coliform content or the bacteria from human and animal wastes found in the water supplied to Brgy. 63 to 67 in Caloocan is higher than the allowable limit, it added.

The MWSS also discovered low levels of chlorine in the water supply in parts of Imus after residents complained about the color and smell of their water.

But Maynilad said that these are isolated cases.

“We can assure you from our side we have already addressed this… patuloy po yung constant natin na regular water quality monitoring. Nag-conduct na rin tayo ng mga additional na flushing activities,” said Maynilad WSO officer Ian Abiera.

The MWSS will have a public dialogue with affected residents next week and will also announce during the meeting how much rebate they can receive from Maynilad.—Vince Ferreras/LDF, GMA Integrated News
